Thomas Paine's pamphlet 'Common Sense' was one of the most influential pieces of literature in America's history. It acted as a catalyst, persuading colonists to act against and challenge the unjust rule of the crown. He first establishes a sense of ethos, he assures the reader that he in no way wishes to sway their opinion (however, he does) ; it's all 'common sense'. Using juxtaposition, Paine describes the role of society in comparison to government. This juxtaposition is meant to attack British monarchy, as it oppresses and alienates their colonial society, by saying: "the latter negatively by restraining our vices". He goes on to attack the parliament and crown by alluding to the simple purpose of government 'a badge of innocence' (almost as if he advocates anarchy); but he only uses it to defy the contradictory role of Britain's government and diplomatic policy in this conquest into the 'New World'.
Further emphasizing the importance of overthrowing this tyrannical government that oppresses and denies natural rights we derive from God. He makes sure they now it is the colonists duty as having political bands with Christianity to abolish such government. -- This is kind of crazy and confusing when you really think about it, though he said he doesn't want to persuade you, that's exactly what he does. Not only does he lie to the reader but he proposes an act of treason and tyranny to counter act tyranny... What?? His purpose is contradictory to his point, though its a good one, he ought not to be trusted.
